All the lesser fiction by H. P. Lovecraft has been collected and is presented chronologically in this volume, prefaced with an introduction by August Derleth and rounded out with Lovecraft's impressive long essay, Supernatural Horror in Literature, long out of print. 

Here are many well known tales--The Tomb, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, Arthur Jermyn, The Cats of Ulthar, The Moon-Bog, The Nameless City, The Hound, The Lurking Fear, He, The Horror at Red Hook, The Strange High House in the Mist, and others, together with two appendices--one of fragments, one of such early tales as The Alchemist, The Beast in the Cave, The Transition of Juan Romero, and others. 

These tales belong to every vein that Lovecraft made his own, and many of them are certainly among the best short stories of the macabre written in our time. At least two of the stories--Herbert West: Reanimator and Imprisoned with the Pharoahs--were written to order, a rare departure from Lovecraft's customary writing habits. Though secondary to the remarkable fiction in The Dunwich Horror and Others, these stories merit preservation. 

This volume completes republication in a collected edition of all the fiction written by H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft's fiction is convincingly rooted in the world of everyday reality, however strange and outre it may be, however compelling in the evocative power of his prose, of which even such a comparatively minor collection as this offers convincing proof.
